Al Pacino's presence and personality as the lawyer Arthur Kirkland, helps carry this drama-comedy through to an effective if melodramatic monologue at the end, functioning as the summation of a court case. Kirkland is a lawyer fighting for truth, justice, and the ideals that many lawyers misplace on their way to fame and fortune. There is no single story here, just a series of cases and problems that Kirkland tackles, including an immoral, vile judge (John Forsyth), hysteria at the scene of a traffic accident, an innocent client sent to jail on a technicality, and along the way, his personal life. That involves his girlfriend (Christine Lahti), his grandfather (Lee Strasberg), and in some ways, his law partner.
